The Eyambe family from Cameroon: Efforts for peace

The Eyambe family is from Cameroon. The Anglophone crisis in the country has left the Cameroon community physically, emotionally and psychologically distressed. The Eyambe family, a witness to the crisis were empowered by the Family Volunteers for Peace (FVP) initiative to work together to help the youth of the community recover. The family’s initiative thus, aimed to address the psychological impact especially for girls and teenagers as their Family Volunteer for Peace (FVP) project.

Their FVP initiative consisted of family service on two spheres, i.e. providing psycho-social support and building open safe spaces for youth peacebuilding.

The psycho social support reached fifteen female survivors of physical or emotional violence from Christian Youth Fellowship (CYF). The support program addressed the emotional, social, mental and spiritual needs of the survivors helping build resilient youths. Eight of them were provided with finance to start up a petty trade

The safe space for youth peacebuilding was made in the Buea municipality. It brought together groups of persons from local community in Buea to stand as a “voice for peace”. Diverse people joined the group including local religious leaders, children and youths who were lovers of peace. The group was called as “friends for peace”.

In addition, the family also shared flyers with peace messages and organized talks on peace in the midst of adversity in relation to peace proximity, peace realization, conflict prevention and conflicts transformation. The family reflects activities “will nourish the hope, commitment, instill positive energy to young survivors who have either faced emotional or physical violence”.

However, the Eyabes faced the challenge of access, identification and mobilization of participants and survivors, financial constraints and explaining the different concepts in most simple manner. Despite the challenges, the Eyabe family were able to spread courage, harmony and peace as they focused on “common joy and suffering” in their FVP project.

Grounded on empathy and motivation, the Eyabe family story is an inspiring family story to bring peace in chaos. Their support and help in addressing critical issues of their community is truly praiseworthy. The family expect to continue their works for peace.
